A Kitchen Garden For Decoration And Utility

by The Shopping Maniac

A kitchen garden has a charm all its own. There really is nothing to beat the look and taste of fruit and vegetables that you’ve grown yourself. If you add a few decorative herbs to the mix, there’s absolutely no reason why your kitchen garden can’t look as good visually as your flower garden.

It’s a fact that fruit, vegetables and herbs are very rewarding to grow. There’s an extra special flavor to produce you’ve grown yourself.

But be warned, a kitchen garden is going to be very labor-intensive. If you’re not into hard, manual work in your garden, a kitchen garden may not be for you. The only way you’re going to get bumper crops of the fruit, vegetables and herbs that you grow is by lavishing tender loving care and attention on them.

Starting your growing early can produce a bountiful crop weeks ahead of its normal time, giving you a home-grown harvest at a time when those fruits and vegetables are particularly expensive in the shops.

You can make your kitchen garden as visually attractive as possible by careful planning. If space is at a premium you can choose some of the more decorative vegetables and herbs and plant them in your flower beds.

Ideally you need to choose a sunny site in your garden for most herbs and vegetables to do well. If you are growing fruit trees, you should ensure that they do not cast a shadow over the vegetables and herbs.

Remember that although most herbs are leafy and lacking flowers, they will provide greenery in your garden, even in the winter. Just exercise a little thought as to where to place them and think in terms of what your garden will look like in each of the seasons and factor this into your planning.

Most herbs will do very well when planted in containers, so they are an excellent option even if you don’t have much space in your garden. Tall herbs can be planted at the back of a traditional flower garden and low-growing herbs make excellent flower garden borders.

The normal method of growing vegetables is in regimented rows. If they are kept properly weeded, this can still look good. Again, if you don’t have much space, you can still grow a large range of vegetables in containers e.g. peas and potatoes. Some vegetables are even attractive enough to be planted amongst the flowers – but remember that you are going to have gaps once the vegetables are harvested.

You may be surprised to learn that there’s a large range of fruit that you can grow even if you don’t have several acres worth of orchard plot. Small apple trees can grow in pots on the patio, you can grow strawberries in containers and there are even certain varieties of cordon-trained apples and pears that can be grown against a garden fence.

Nearly all fruit trees prefer a sunny site. You will certainly suffer from poor crops if you allow frost to damage the blossom on apple and pear trees. Pears are particularly vulnerable because they tend to flower earlier than apple trees.

If you don’t have space in abundance but still want to try your hand at fruit growing then you should look at planting trained fruit trees such as espaliers, cordons and fans against a fence or wall. They can look very decorative and take up very little room.

With a modicum of planning, thought and imagination there really is no reason at all why you can’t have the joy of growing and harvesting food for your own kitchen table in your own kitchen garden, no matter how small the plot.

A gift to encourage a musician

by The Shopping Maniac

My husband has always said that he wants to start playing guitar at this local bar that has a Sunday open mike night. He hasn’t done it yet, but he keeps talking about practicing some songs and then going out and playing.

I really don’t know why he doesn’t just get up and go and do it. He’s an amazing musician. He’s been playing guitar since he was 9 years old! He actually plays 13 instruments. I’ve always said he should either try to join a band or maybe try to become a studio musician. I know he probably wouldn’t want to be a studio musician, but he has the talent to play on records. I’m sure of it.

Anyway .. I was thinking .. maybe getting him something to use at one of these “open Mike nights” might encourage him to actually go and do it. Eh .. doesn’t that sound like a good idea? I was thinking something like looking maybe buy vocopro wireless microphone for him to use on stage. He could even use it when he plays at work related events. He always gets asked to play at the Hospitals charity related and Christmas events, I’m sure he could use a wireless mic there too.

I’m going to think about it. Perhaps I’ll come up with something else that looks good but for now that sounds like a great idea. Any other suggestions?

Would you buy any of these strange products?

by The Shopping Maniac

Do you ever think about all the strange things that are available to buy? I mean there’s a whole variety of practical items, but there’s just as many impractical items too!

For instance .. have you ever felt the need to make sandwhiches in the shape of mustaches?

No … I didn’t think you did. I haven’t felt the urge either, but I suppose someone out there has and thought it was a good idea to market the Crustache.

I guess people must be buying it!

Oh and then, for men that feel the need to show off a hair chest yet don’t seem to have one of their own to bare there’s the very realistic looking Chest tie.

Would you wear that?

Now this product, the Fly Shooter, looks like it might actually work. It even says that it’s fast and fun, easy and safe, no ugly mess, kills flies and other bugs accurately. If that’s true it might come in handy at the cottage!

So tell me the truth .. do you own or would you use any of these products? Come on .. fess up!

My blogs are going truly mobile

by The Shopping Maniac

I’ve been setting up my blogs with a new mobile plugin. Well the plugin isn’t new but it’s new to my blog because I was using a different mobile plugin prior to using this one. I’m using WpTouch now and so far it seem to be working fairly well.

I’ve been using my smart phone and my ipod touch 32g to look at my various blogs mobile webpages to see how they render using the new plugin and there are some differences depending whether I’m using my phone or the iPod. When I use the iPod I can see the Adsense ads on my pages and a few other features and when I use the Nokia I can’t see the ads at all. It’s very strange.

At least with this Mobile plugin I can set up Google analytics and track visitors to the mobile pages better. Hopefully I’ll have better stats on my sites now because I think I’ve been missing stats on my mobile visitors in the past.

If you have a website have you made sure that it looks good when people visit it with a smartphone or iPad? Since mobile usage is only going up and up it’s really important to make sure your site is viewable and user friendly to mobile users.

Stores selling winter coats in the middle of a heat wave?

by The Shopping Maniac

Why do stores sell things out of season? Oh and by out of Season I mean way out of season, like six months out of season?

I’ll give you and example if you’re trying to figure out what the heck I’m talking about, although I have a feeling some of you can probably guess. I was in both Walmart and Costco several times in the month of July and guess what I saw in both stores? I saw them selling things like winter coats and Christmas items!

Yes! It’s true! Now who but the most massive of bargain hunters or seriously confused tourist visiting Canada comes shopping for winter coats in July? In the middle of a massive heat wave no less? The day I first noticed winter coats in the stores the temperatures outside were something like 35 Celsius (95 F) but felt like 43 Celsius (109 F) with the humidity. Yeah .. I wanna buy a winter coat.

I was actually looking for shorts but of course I couldn’t find any .. I have to shop for those in January around here!
