Shopping in New York: Find the Best Stores

by Trish

From the massive department stores lining Fifth Avenue, to the small boutiques and independent shops dotting the East Village, New York is a veritable shopping mecca for fashionistas and everyday consumers alike. With all of the hustle and bustle and constant excitement, however, it can be somewhat challenging to narrow down the very best stores in the city. Fortunately, with a bit of luck and research beforehand, any visitor to New York can make certain they don’t miss a beat during their holiday.

Department Stores

For years, New York’s shopping experience has been influenced by the large department stores, such as Macy’s and Bloomingdales. These iconic stores still sell some of the best merchandise in the city. Not only is it fun to browse through the wares on display, but experiencing the atmosphere of these stores themselves is an adventure in its own right.

For those looking to drop a fair bit of money on their shopping adventure, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman are both popular destinations. These stores sell apparel and accessories from some of the world’s most sought after designers. From Chanel to Gucci, Prada to Stella McCartney, it is easy to find luxury clothing in these fabulous shops.

Independent Stores

While it may be fun to socialise with the wealthy shoppers of New York, the city is also home to plenty of independent boutiques with their own unique vibes. One of the great things about New York is that there is something for everyone. For those looking the casual hipster feel, head to Hollander & Lexer in Williamsburg. This popular shop mixes jewellery and vintage accessories with modern apparel that is comfortable and easy to wear.

On the Lower East Side, EVA is a popular destination for those looking to sport cutting-edge designs. Looks fresh from the runway populate the shelves and racks in this boutique. EVA often showcases foreign designers and up-and-coming stylists’ picks, making it easy to score on great outfits at an affordable cost.

Ask Around

Regardless of where one heads in New York, it is easy to find fantastic shopping destinations on nearly every corner. One simple tip for finding more fabulous shops is to simply ask salespeople for their advice. If a boutique or shop really stands out in terms of its apparel and overall style, there is a good chance staff members will have an idea of what other business options are located in the immediate area.

New York shopping is a must for all visitors to the city and whether you visit the smaller boutiques or the larger department stores you will be sure to be able to shop until you drop!

4 Things to Consider when Buying Curtains

by Trish

Whether it’s time for a change or you have moved into a new place, you want to make the right choice when it comes to your curtains. The right window treatments will make your room look welcoming and beautiful, and the wrong choices can make it seem cramped and dull. Before you head out to look at curtain options, consider these aspects to ensure that you buy the perfect ones.

Up to the Ceiling or the Top of the Window?

The first question you have to ask yourself is where the curtains will hang from. Conventional wisdom says that the curtains should be mounted a few inches above the window frame, but you don’t have to go conventional. If you have 8-foot ceilings, mounting the curtains near the ceiling will make your room feel taller and more luxurious. It’s an easy way to give even a small window more importance and make it feel larger. It’s an optical illusion that works wonders, so take a moment to consider how taller curtains would look in your space.

Make them Wider

Windows have historically been an expensive sign of wealth and success. Over the centuries, the poor couldn’t afford fancy glass windows, and they certainly couldn’t buy windows that covered vast areas of the wall. While windows are larger and more affordable now, the feeling that large windows belong to the wealthy lingers in our subconscious. You don’t have to invest in new windows and major construction to create the same feel. Use ready made curtains to make it look like a window is larger than it is. Take the curtains out several feet past the window, and you will find that your room instantly feels more luxurious and sophisticated than it does when the curtains stop just past the frame. This technique is so effective that you can even use it to cover an entire wall with beautiful curtains.

Pool them on the Floor

If you are creating the illusion of a larger window by taking the curtains further out than necessary, then you need to carry the fabric to the floor. Otherwise, the illusion will be ruined. Ready made curtains can stop right at the floor for a crisp, clean look, but they will look rich and elegant when you buy longer drapes and allow the extra fabric to drape onto the floor.

Limited Coverings for the Window

Of course, there are times when you just want to cover the window without trying to make the window look larger. This is often the case in functional rooms like kitchens and mudrooms and when the window is on a door. Anytime you want the curtains to closely match the exact window size, consider using beautiful shades instead. Elegant Roman or casual balloon shades create a clean look you will love. You can also use upper and lower curtain rods to keep traditional curtains close to the window and out of the way.

Once you know how larger or small your curtains will be, you are ready to start taking measurements. Don’t take measurements of your window, but focus on measuring the larger area your curtains will ultimately cover. Multiply the width by 1.5 or double it to allow plenty of space for the curtains to fall into attractive folds. With these measurements in hand, you are ready to head to the store and start shopping for your beautiful new curtains.

Bike Storage Tips For Small Spaces

by Trish

Not everyone who wants to own a bike has a lot of room for storage. Because of that some people will simply give up on having a bike altogether. There are some things that you can do that will allow you to have a good bike even when your space is limited. It may take a little extra work but in the end, having limited space should not limit you from having the bike of your dreams. Here are some of the best tips for ensuring that you have enough space to enjoy your bike and store it as well.

Remove The Front Wheel

One of the best things that you can do to save you some space when you own a bike is to remove its front wheel. It is not difficult to do so. You may have seen a lot of people who already do this. People do it when they leave their bike on the street as a way to secure their bike but you can also do it in order to save you some room. All that you need in order to remove the bike’s wheel is the right tools. If you bought your bike to assemble it yourself you probably got the tools when you bought the bike.

Using A Storage Facility

If you live in a city, it should not be that difficult to find a storage facility. As long as the storage facility is close to your home, you could be using it to keep your bike there. While it may be additional money to spend, a lot of people who love cycling are doing it because that is the way they can keep their bikes and not have to make their living space even smaller. Most of the storage facilities will have different size compartments so get one that’s just good enough for your bike.

Using Hooks

Another great way to save yourself some room while keeping your bike at home is to use wall mounted hooks. These hooks allow you to hang your bike over other items and therefore save you space. The hooks are very easy to install and use. All you have to do is attach them to the wall and use strategic spots on your bike to hang it. Some hooks are especially designed for bikes and that is your best bet when trying to save space in a small apartment.

Specially Designed Furniture

Finally, it is also possible to find specially designed furniture to keep your bike in smaller homes or apartments. The furniture is designed to keep your bike in one spot with other items in the same place so that you can save space. They are generally shelving unites with a section specially designed to store your bike. You can find this type of furniture at specialized stores and the biggest furniture stores in the market. This furniture is very affordable so that you could be saving space and money at the same time while you keep your bike right at home.

How to Budget for Your Wedding

by Trish

Planning for a wedding can be an incredibly stressful and difficult process and is something that requires a huge amount of time and organization. Many couples will get engaged at least a year before getting married and the reason for this is often that it simply takes that long for a wedding to come together.

Getting started as soon as possible then is an important way to make sure that you start to make the whole thing seem a little more doable, and step one is to come up with a budget – an amount of money that you think you will realistically be spending. While this doesn’t have to be exact, coming up with a figure based on how much cash you have at your disposal and how much you expect everything to cost can help you to then decide things like the number of guests you’ll invite, the number of ushers and bridesmaids you’re going to have and the kind of venue you’ll pick.

So to get you started and set you on your way, let’s take a look at the requirements for a wedding and the other things that will affect your budget.

What Your Budget Has to Cover

The first thing to do when budgeting for your wedding is to look at the various costs you need to expect so that you can then start to assign rough amounts to each to come up with a ball-park figure. It’s easy to forget elements, so for your convenience here is a near-comprehensive list of elements you need to keep in mind…

Venue (Ceremony)

Venue (Reception)

Suit for the Groom

Wedding Dress

Hair, Makeup, Shoes and Accessories for Bride

Ushers’ Suits

Bridesmaids’ Dresse

Catering (Including drink)

Music (String quartet, DJ etc.)

Transport

Flowers

Stationery (Invitations, place names etc.)

Wedding Photography/Wedding Cinematography

Think about how much you want to spend on each of these things and then remember that there will be other elements you will need to spend money on that don’t directly pertain to the day itself – for instance you will need to pay for a hen do and stag party and of course your honeymoon all of which might be quite expensive.

When you start to look how much you want to spend on each you will come up with a rough figure that may be higher than you hoped or within your budget. Your next job is to decide whether you can afford this and whether you want to spend that much. Look into combined savings and what proportion you want to spend on a wedding, and then the bride’s parents if they will be contributing. It may feel rude to ask, but the sooner you know for sure the sooner you’ll be able to come up with a suitable budget.

If you find your costs exceed your budget then it comes time to start finding ways of reducing these without compromising on your big day. This might mean using friends to help with things like the flowers, it might mean reducing your number of visitors, or just reducing your number of ushers.

How to Avoid Things Going Wrong on Your Wedding Day

by Trish

Endless love

Any wedding is likely to involve a large number of different elements and a hundred different things that could go wrong. The cost of a wedding is only really surpassed by the scale of the administrative and logistical undertaking, and the stakes are of course incredibly high. So how do you make sure that nothing goes wrong on your wedding day and what are the things you need to look out for? Here we will look at some precautions to take to avoid common problems.

My Wedding Invitations

Start Organizing Early

There is an awful lot to organize on any wedding day, and a lot of this is going to be time-sensitive. Things like booking venues and churches all require you to get in early to avoid them becoming fully booked, while getting the invitations out as early as possible can avoid people being unable to be there for this important occasion. The sooner you start organizing, the more you can avoid the myriad problems that crop up when organizing any big event.

Use Save the Dates

Another way to ensure that everyone you want at your wedding is able to attend is to use ‘save the dates’ which are invitations you send before you have the official invite.

Use the Best Services

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and unfortunately when you plan a wedding you will be relying on many other people to ensure everything goes smoothly. Using the best services means finding the best florist, the best hair dresser and the best makeup artist to ensure that you won’t be let down and that everything is going to look great on the day. Also particularly important is your transport and booking a good wedding limo while making sure they have all the accurate and up-to-date information is a crucial element to remember if you want to make sure everyone arrives on time.

Order Extra Food

Catering is an area that can often go wrong at a wedding and which can leave people in a bad mood if they’re hungry and kept waiting, or if they don’t get what they ordered. Start your event with canapés to make sure no one is starving no matter what happens, and make sure your caterers have spares of each dish to ensure that people who change their name or forget their order don’t ruin everything. Likewise it can help to send a reminder confirming what everyone ordered, or if you want to make things easier still – just order a buffet instead.

Split it Into Parts

There are many stresses that can come from having just one big event – for instance what if your rowdy mates from back home don’t get on with your Grandma? Having several smaller parts to your wedding solves this problem by allowing you to invite some people to the whole thing and others to parts. This could mean Gran comes to the ceremony, and that your friends come to the disco afterwards. This can also save you money and means that your whole day is less reliant on one venue or one menu.
