Strange weather today

by The Shopping Maniac

The weather was so strange today! I was up early because I had an appointment and I found it to be fairly nice in the early morning but shortly after I got home again I looked outside and it looked like there was a blizzard going on. Crazy weather!

A while after the snow storm the sun came out and the snow melted away and it seemed like a nice day again. It was almost like the blizzard like weather hadn’t happened … But … then heavy winds started up. Of course that happened to be just when I was out walking my dog. I could barely walk! Things were blowing in the street. It was garbage day and the garbage containers were blowing over. I even saw someones mesh pool fence looking like it was going to blow over. Needless to say I didn’t stay out with the dog very long.

Later in the day the blizzard conditions came back a few more times alternating with sunny periods. Really weird weather. I’m glad I didn’t have to be outside for long today!

Backing up my Flickr account

by The Shopping Maniac

I’m in the process of backing up my Flickr account. I’ve heard of some people having their whole accounts wiped out or rather their photos being deleted, so I decided that since I have close to 14,000 photos in my account it would be a great idea to back up my account. Call it my method of cyber security so to speak.

One of the reasons that I’m backing up my account, other than it’s a good idea to do it since I have so many photos stored on Flickr is also because I noticed that they have my account set to not be in the public search. That means they flagged my account at some point. Oh oh! Now I don’t think I’ve ever done anything to break Flickr’s rules but who knows! So .. I’m backing up my account just in case my act of contacting them to ask them to review my account so that it can be put back in public search doesn’t end up getting my account closed.

Have you ever had any problems on Flickr? Do you store lots of photos there? Do you back up your photos too?

Migraine behind my eye

by The Shopping Maniac

I don’t know if it’s the weather this week or just me but I’ve been headachey or worse – had a migraine most of the week.

I’ve had a headache pretty much since I got up this morning but I think it’s turning into a migraine now. My right eye is tender – kind of like someone punched me in the eye a few days ago – or what I think it would feel like since I’ve never actually been punched in the eye. My eye has hurt on and off a few times this year – even without a headache or migraine. I’m pretty sure it’s migraine related even if there is no head pain accompanying it since I’m a migraine sufferer.

Maybe it’s time for me to try some Migraine Botox. I used to work in a pain clinic (as a nurse) where we’d give people Botox injections in their face (eyebrows and temples and back of the head) to help with migraines. Perhaps that’s what I need now. I know it helped several of our patients.

I think for now I’m going to just take my migraine medication and lie down with a heating pad at the back of my neck. If that doesn’t work I’ll switch to an icepack for my head. My neurologist said one of the best things for a migraine was a warm body and cold head as in bundle up in a blanket and put a cold pack on your head … so we’ll see which works best for me.

A sad weekend trip

by The Shopping Maniac

I’ve had a busy few days. Sad few days actually. My dear cousin passed away Monday evening in Ottawa and my brother, my sister in law and I traveled to Ottawa on Friday to attend the visitation and then the funeral mass on Saturday.

The drive from Toronto takes about five hours and I had to meet my brother and sister in law in a certain area as they were driving so it took me close to an extra hour to get to our meeting area (and back when we arrive back in Toronto) so it’s been a long 32 hours! Yes… 32 hours from the start of my journey Friday morning to my arrival home at about 5 pm Saturday evening. I feel like one of those millermatic machines has been trying to weld me together or something …

I’m sad that my cousin is no longer with us, but at least she is no longer in pain or suffering and her close family can begin to heal now too.

The only good thing about family funerals is the fact that we get to see family members that we barely ever see – except at these type of events. This time I vowed that I would keep in touch with most of my cousins via email or telephone. My cousin from detroit’s new wife even seemed interested in visiting Toronto for the first time .. so maybe we’ll start having happier “distant” relative get togethers soon. I certainly hope so!

Great deal on a new microwave

by The Shopping Maniac

It seems like just about every Monday is shopping day. I’m sure most people have their shopping day on a Saturday or Sunday, but for our household it seems to almost always fall on a Monday.

Yesterday was a particularly busy shopping day. The night before the microwave died as I was making dinner! Ahhhh! No I wasn’t making “microwave dinners” or anything like that, but I do tend to use the microwave pretty much daily when I cook. I use it to heat things, steam vegetables, cook foods – it’s a well used appliance. I couldn’t live a day without my microwave or at least I didn’t think I could.

So … after doing the usually things like picking up some of my prescriptions (man I hate having Crohns!) and then getting groceries we started looking in a few stores for microwaves. I didn’t want a tiny microwave. Our previous one had been a 1.6 cubic ft microwave. Yes- big enough to put a good size dish, bowl or plate in. See I told you I cook in it. Unfortunately most of the stores that we went to had only .9. 1.0 or 1.2 cubic ft microwaves. I never realized how hard it was to find larger ones!

Finally we found the one we were looking for in two different stores – we’d gone back and forth doing a price comparison since the stores were close together. The store we eventually bought from had the microwave that we wanted listed at a higher price, but when we told them the other store had them for about $25 cheaper they immediately told us they’d match the price … then they said that oh .. the only ones we have of that model are in open boxes. So .. they said that if wanted an open box microwave that they’d drop the price a further $50 and then add a 3 year store warranty. We looked at all three open boxes and picked the one that looked like it had only been opened in the store. I’m so happy we got that deal! It was easy on our debit cards – that’s for sure!

The microwave worked just fine when we got it home and set it up so so far so good! It was a busy shopping day as I said .. but a very successful one!
