Burned through yet another laptop!

by The Shopping Maniac

For the last 7 years I’ve been at home on medical leave. During that time I haven’t just stayed in bed … I’m an extreme type A personality that has to be busy all the time. That’s probably one of the reasons why I’m not healthy yet! I keep running myself to the ground by staying up to all hours working – even when I’m home on medical leave. Yes I’m still working even though I’m home, it’s just not at the job that I used to do.

These days I work behind a computer blogging and doing graphic design. I must be behind the computer screen about eighteen hours a day most days. Way too long but that’s the way it is. My long hours are hard on my computers. I’ve been through two laptops so far. My last one pretty much burnt itself out two weeks ago. It got slower and slower and I started calling it Molasses as a nickname if it worked at all.

I finally broke down about a week and a half ago and bought yet another laptop. So far I love the new HP. I hope this one lasts several years but we’ll see. At least this one might have a chance .. I’m hoping to go back to work in the next month or two so my computer hours will be cut down to some degree so that should save the laptop. Of course I expect I’ll be working on it just as hard when I come home from work and on my days off. I plan on using this online business cards design site to create some business cards so I can promote my webdesign and graphics business to my coworkers once I get back to work.

Do you work from home on the computer? If you do, how many hours a day are you on the computer? Do you go through computers/laptops much more quickly than you think you should?

I could be sleeping better

by The Shopping Maniac

I’ve been more tired than usual lately. Perhaps it’s because of all the late hours I’ve been pulling staying up studying for exams … but I’ve noticed that I just don’t sleep as much or as deeply lately.

I wake up at night and try to get comfortable, fluff up my pillow and change positions. I’ve even gone out shopping for new pillows. I purchased a couple of firm pillows to see if that would help. My old pillow used to be quite firm but it was getting softer and losing it’s shape so I thought that might have been part of the problem but the firmer pillows don’t seem to be helping. Perhaps a neck pillow or even a new mattress might help.

I know one thing that really might help … if I get more active during the day. I’ve been less active in the last couple of months because of all the studying I’ve been doing. So .. I plan on starting to take the dog out for long long walks again beginning this week. She definitely needs the walks and I could use them too. The walks will be good for me physically and I’m sure they will help me sleep wise too.

How to Become a Memory Master

by Trish

Our memory is an incredibly important tool for our everyday lives. It is what we use in order to relive the past and reminisce and is what thus gives our experiences meaning, but at the same time it is what we use to make decisions and to guide our future actions – without memory we’d be as useless as babies. But then there are also the practical aspects of memory on a more day to day basis as we use it to do maths and sums, to socialise and remember names and faces and to learn new subjects and pass exams.

As such then our memory is an important tool that’s very much worth training, and with the right strategy it is possible for anyone to improve just as they might improve a muscle or a physical ability. In fact, it can be trained to such a degree that some people even manage to make a living out of being ‘memory masters’ and quickly learning the order of a pack of cards or doing other impressive stunts.

So what’s their secret? And how can you learn the same kind of mastery? Here we will look at the answers to those questions so that you might develop a better command of your memory and so of time itself…

Remembering Lists

In his book ‘Trick of the Mind’, Derren Brown explains one memory technique popular among memory masters which is ‘liking’. Here if you want to remember a list or sequence of any kind, you will remember the order by linking those things together. To do this you will normally create a visual scene in your mind and the intention is to make that visual scene as absurd and therefore memorable as possible. For instance then if you were trying to remember a shopping list consisting of bananas, bread and fish – you might visualise a banana sandwich, and then fish made entirely out of bread. Take some time to really look at this mental image and once it’s burned on your mind’s eye, move on to the next one. This is also useful for remembering the order of the items on a list.

Rhyme

Of course if you need to remember a date for an exam, you won’t have the option to create weird visual images – unless of course that is you use rhyming items for the numbers. Thus instead of 1955 you have ‘pie clean nifty dive’, and to remember this you might think of someone dusting a pie, of someone cool like the Fonz with a vacuum, and then of the Fonz doing a dive. Suddenly you have something a lot more memorable than dry numbers.

Pneumonics

Pneumonics are little ‘tricks’ you can use to remember something. Rhyme is a common form of pneumonic, but another is to try using acronyms – so for instance you might remember the 4 C’s which is how we assess diamonds: carat, cut, clarity and colour. Simply having the first letter here is enough to trigger our memory.

Hypnosis

When remembering things from long ago sometimes our unconscious mind has more information than we’re aware of but it has simply been repressed or buried. Using hypnosis a therapist can take us through various layers of our consciousness by following leads and using tricks like free association and this can sometimes help us to relieve memories we thought long forgotten.

You’ll Fall For Metallic Eyes This Autumn

by Trish

This fall, it’s going to be all about the metallic hues to brighten the skin. Metallic shades can be used anywhere, but one of the best places for these colors is on your eyelid. Many runway models are rocking metallic eye shadow this fall, and for good reason. Sure, a few people may fear they can’t pull off the shimmer, but in reality, with so many metallic eye shadows out there, from gold to silver to even copper, anyone can rock this bold look for Fall. Want to know how you pull off this look? Here is the 4-1-1.

Why The Metallic Look is Popular

The metallic eye makeup trend is popular because it lightens the eyes, and brings attention right where you want it. It is so easy to do, and with a variety of metallic colors on the market, you can find the best one for your skin tone. No matter what color eyes you may have, there is a color that will work perfectly for you. You can apply as much or as little product as you want, so you can wear this look both night and day. Red and brown colors are simply great for fall and resemble fall foliage. The smoky eye look can also be done using darker metallic colors, and is something to try if you love the classic and ever popular smoky eye.

Two Ways to Rock It

If you want to give your face a nice glow, but you don’t want something that is too over the top, you may want to consider getting some gold eye shadow and giving your eyelid a soft dusting. You do not have to apply too much, and can get just the slightest hint of shine. The goal is sheer, so a bit will do just fine.

If you want to try and do a smoky eye using metallic colors, you will want to have a pallet on hand with many colors. You will want to try to apply a deep copper shade to your eyelid and you will want to blend this up towards the brow bone. You will want to give your eyes some depth by applying a darker matte shadow at the outer crease. You will want to use the same copper you used on your eyelid underneath your eye as well, almost like it was eyeliner. You can then apply some black eyeliner, but do not go too overboard. Some mascara will complete the look.

As you can see, metallic eye shadows can be used in a number of ways to create a number of different looks. No matter what you are trying to do, you can do it with metallic colors. Give these looks a try for something new and fun this fall, and you may find yourself utterly surprised at how much you like them. They’re easy to do and will look great with any eye color!

No rest for me

by The Shopping Maniac

It’s been a busy week. I started taking my online college classes earlier this week and as it turns out I seem to have to do something for class just about every day. I can’t believe how difficult it’s been trying to get back into “school” mode. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised since it’s been quite a number of years since I was last in college.

Along with doing things like getting my text books for school and figuring out how to get into study mode again I’ve also been doing plenty of other things this week. For example I’m still trying to work on most of my blogs – updating them and slowly changing the themes on theme for a more up to date look. I also did a WordPress update on all of my sites since WordPress did yet another upgrade. At least that takes a lot less time than it used to in the past when you had to do things manually.

My husband was also home for three days in the middle of the week. Very distracting as far as me getting any work done, so we worked on a bit of our home renovations. Can you tell I’m all over the place! What I really need to do is rest but that will never happen!

Tomorrow I’m supposed to go out shopping with a friend of mine. She’s expecting her first child and she wants only the best for her new baby. We’re going to a malls to look for the best bratt décor cribs. Hopefully we’ll find something at Yorkdale. It’s a big enough mall!

Perhaps after our shopping spree tomorrow I will rest. I’ve certainly been busy enough this week. I’ll deserve a rest. I know my abdomen will appreciate it. Yes the Crohn’s is acting up again too.
