Strange eye injury

by The Shopping Maniac

I had the weirdest eye injury last week. I guess you could say that I got a sliver in my eye. Uh huh … weird, I told you so.

I was putting some red cedar mulch down on one of my garden beds and the mulch was very dry. The wind picked up and blew it back in my face and ta da … sliver in my eye. The next thing I new I was walking down the street to the hospital – thank fully it’s very close, and then going through the process of getting the mulch out of my eye. My eye is still irritated, but it’s a lot better.

I’m actually on medically leave from the ER. I’m a nurse there, so it was kind of interesting to be back in the old work place seeing all of my old co-workers, seeing them run around in their dickies scrubs and catching up on the latest gossip as I waited for my eye to be fixed up. I kind of miss the place, but then again I’m still not quite ready to be back. I’ve got to be fairly healthy to return.

Almost 7 months since I quit smoking!

by The Shopping Maniac

Wow, it’s hard to believe that it’s been almost 7 months since my husband and I both quit smoking cigarettes! Yep, June 12th will be 7 months.

I have to admit that during that first month or two I sometimes wondered if I’d ever make it this far. It was really hard to quit because I was so addicted to smoking. It was awful. I quit by using a medication called Zyban for three weeks – it made the cigarettes that I was smoking beginning to seem like hot air, by the second week on the medication I just stopped smoking …. but some people suggested I try ecigarettes. I really wasn’t sure about trying the ecigarettes because they still had nicotine in them and it was still a product that you’re bringing to your mouth regularly … I felt it was better to totally break the habit.

Anyway .. to each his own. Smoking is a nasty habit and it’s terribly addictive. I know – I smoked for over 25 years – I guess closer to 27 years to tell the truth and it took that long to quit! So I guess however anyone can do it the more power to them.

Have you managed to quit smoking? If so – how did you do it?

My cellphone company messed up and changed my number!

by The Shopping Maniac

Earlier today, when my husband called me from a store using our cellphone I got a big shock … instead of seeing our normal cellphone number I saw a number with my husbands name above it but the number was from Ottawa Ontario instead of Toronto.

I didn’t know what was going on .. I immediately told my husband to hang up because I thought we’d either be charged long distance or roaming charges and I also suspected that maybe our cellphone number had been changed. But how … why?

I immediately called our cellphone provider – Rogers – and asked for the department of major screw ups. Yes I said that. LOL It seems they don’t know what happened. I was asked – are you moving to Calgary and then they asked if I was moving from PEI? and I said no … I’ve lived in Toronto for 20 years … I’m not moving and I didn’t ask for my number to change, get my old cellphone number back. I was so upset- I swear I just about needed an ekg especially when she told me that there was also a $400 charge on my bill!

Lucky for me the Rogers person I was talking with was calm and helpful and after talking with her for about 30 minutes we got everything straightened out and I got my old cellphone number back. I’d had that cellphone number for about 15 years so it would have been terrible to lose it. I still don’t know how or why they gave it away and I want some explanations.

I’m seriously thinking of leaving my cellphone provider … if you have any suggestions as to who might be better in the Toronto area .. please let me know.

I think i have to give up dairy products

by The Shopping Maniac

I don’t think I can eat cheese any more … or maybe even most dairy products. Last week I bought some herb and garlic cream cheese and for a few days I was having a little bit on some pita crackers each day. The next thing I knew I couldn’t go to the washroom!

Now I know that yogurt gives me big time problems but I didn’t realize that cream cheese did too! I suppose regular cheese might cause me to need a big ‘ol colon cleanse too … so I guess I’d better either eat lots of fiber and drink lots of water if I’m going to be eating any dairy or just try my best to avoid those items from my diet as best as I can.

It’s too bad because I really like cheese. I don’t really care that much if I ever have milk or ice cream again, but cheese … well that would be hard to not ever have again if I had to completely give it up.

Are there any foods that you have to avoid that just don’t sit right with you?

Fruit desserts

by The Shopping Maniac

Over the last few months my husband and I have tried our best to have a piece of fruit for dessert most evenings.

Lately we’ve lucked out and we’ve managed to come across some great sales on strawberries so cut up fresh strawberries has been our main dessert over the last month.

Now I’ve just been visiting a site located at www.berries.com that sells all kinds of berry desserts like chocolate covered strawberries. I know …. maybe not quite as healthy as the desserts that we’ve been having, but if we wanted to change things up a bit and have a bit more decadent dessert this would be the place to get it, I think. There selection looks delicious.

Do you like chocolate covered berries or fruit for dessert? What’s your favorite kind of fruit?
