Spending a sunny afternoon at the neighbors

by The Shopping Maniac

My husband and I were outside today enjoying the sunshine, the warm weather and getting a little yard work done.

While I was out front with our dog one of our neighbors came over and asked if we wanted some herbs. He and his partner had planted a little herb garden at the front of their house earlier this summer and it’s doing very well. So well in fact that they have plenty to share.

My husband was cutting the grass when our neighbor came over, so I’d gone over to his house on my own with our dog and my husband joined us when he finished our tiny yard.

Once we were done talking about the little herb garden our neighbor brought us into his backyard to show us some of his other plants and we end up sitting on his patio with some of his roommates and having a few drinks. Correction … my husband had a few drinks – I had a Pepsi since I can’t drink with my migraine meds.

By the time we were heading home I think we’d ended up being over at the neighbors for about two hours and we’d exchanged dinner invitations between us. We used to spend more time with these particular neighbors a few years ago, but we haven’t spent much time with them lately. Perhaps that’s about to change again. It was fun spending some time with our friend this afternoon.

Converstations with my sister

by The Shopping Maniac

My sister and I have been talking a lot this week. I think we’ve already talked for about four hours on the phone this week and that’s only two days worth of conversations! My ear is sore!

We have a strange communication pattern. We’ll sometimes go months without really talking and then we’ll talk quite a bit for weeks on end and then not talk again for quite a while. I don’t know why we do this, but we’ve been doing this for years.

We used to live together when I first moved to Toronto and then my sister got me a job in the jewelery industry, the same industry she was working in at the time (and still works in) and then we each started businesses in the jewellery trade and ended up working together – and living together. Perhaps that’s why we now go through these strange on and off communication phases. I think we used to be toooooo together. LOL

Anyway … our conversation today ran from going over what was happening with her two kids to people we both know, to discussing various health problems we’re both experiencing and so on.

My sister asked me an interesting question while we were talking. We both have thyroid problems. She’s had her thyroid totally removed and I’ve had half of my thyroid removed so we’re both on Hormone replacement therapy but, well … what if something happened – how long could you live without thyroid replacement medication?

I had to ask her what she meant by “what if something happened” and of course she meant something catastrophic like end of the world bad where you can’t get your prescription medications anymore or at least not for a long time. Now if something like that were the case, well … in the case of thyroid meds I’d probably slow down a lot, but I’d likely survive since I still have half my thyroid as dysfunctional as it is, but my sister doesn’t have a thyroid at all and since the thyroid is so vitally important to ones metabolism and body function … I think within a couple of weeks my sister would be quite ill without her medication.

Anyway … I really don’t think my sister has anything to worry about, but it was an interesting question. Something to think about! I’m sure a lot of people are living on medications that are keeping them going day by day and that if they didn’t have them their lives would be vastly different.

Hmmm I wonder if my sister and I will talk tomorrow .. and if so .. for how long! Maybe I’ll use the speaker phone – my ear will appreciate that, it doesn’t like the phone rubbing up against it.

My husband is on temporary layoff again

by The Shopping Maniac

My husband is on one of his temporary lay off weeks again. This is the second one this summer and if history repeats itself he’ll have two more weeks or temporary layoffs at the end of the year. Not very good when you don’t have much money to work with to pay the bills to begin with as it is!

So it seems that every time my husband has one of his weeks off he goes out of town. He’s at his parents house right now helping them out by fixing things around their house.

Part of me doesn’t mind him going away and helping out his family but part of me wants him to stick around and well … I guess get some stuff done around our house too. I mean … I’ve been living in a house with stalled renovations for uh … six years now and my husband all of a sudden has all this extra time on his hands .. maybe just maybe he could work with me to put the ceiling up in our living room dining room? Nope? Nah … he just called and he’s running off to some store to get some polaris sportsman parts. I have no idea what they are but he needs them.

He was supposed to be home tomorrow evening but now he says he might not be back until Thursday … Big Sigh … Oh well maybe we’ll get some work done this weekend.

Peace and Quiet

by The Shopping Maniac

My husband is on the road this weekend driving back and forth from Toronto to the Kemptville area.

He went there on Friday evening to be with his brother and nephew. His nephew is trying out for an NHL farm team this weekend so my husband went to cheer him on. My husband called me late last night to let me know he got there safely. The traffic will be very bad coming home tomorrow what will everyone coming home from the cottage so hopefully the car doesn’t overheat or anything and he doesn’t end up needing emergency roadside assistance.

While he’s away it’s just me and my big black Lab at home. We’re enjoying the peace and quiet. Well … actually, I think my husband being away kind of disrupts things, especially for my dog. She spent half of last evening lying by the door hoping he was going to come back and today she wouldn’t do her business until the evening! So yeah, she’s off when he’s not around. Otherwise, we’re fine.

Keeping in touch with relatives

by The Shopping Maniac

I ran into my ex-brother in law the other day. It was my twin niece and nephews birthdays and I was calling the house to talk to my nephew but he wasn’t home so I ended up having a long talk with my ex brother in law.

I hadn’t talked to him for over a year, so it was good to catch up with him. It sounds like he’s pretty much the same as he used to be. When he’s not working he’s either barbecuing or smoking meat in the back yard or he’s out in a forest somewhere hunting. In fact part of our conversation did involve talking about hunting. It seems he’s looking into getting new hunting tree stands or something so he’ll be already for hunting season this fall.

I really should call him more often. Just because he isn’t my brother in law anymore doesn’t mean we can’t talk occasionally. I always liked him. We should stay in touch. Do you stay in touch with “ex” relatives?
