Top Tips To Transform Your Dingy Bathroom To An Urban Oasis

by Trish

Never underestimate the importance of style in the bathroom. After the bedroom, it’s the first room you face in the morning and the room you return to the most throughout the day. It’s the one room of the house where you can usually count on being alone, and it’s the room that almost forces you to relax.

Don’t let a dreary, dingy bathroom make you dread the time you spend there. Put these tips into practice and transform your bleak bathroom into an urban oasis.

Lighting

Sleek, modern lighting can give your bathroom a spa-like feel. Elegant pendants with glass drum shades combine stylish functionality with easy-to-clean practicality. Smooth frosted glass sconces provide the ambient lighting every bathroom needs. If you have enough room, a crystal chandelier hung over a modern vessel sink strikes an unexpected contrast between quiet neutrals and over-the-top drama.

Flooring

Hardwood flooring is every decorator’s favorite, but it’s just not practical in the bathroom. Fortunately, most bathrooms are small enough that you can splurge on your flooring, because you won’t need a lot of material. A natural stone floor brings nature indoors, which is always calming. If you can’t afford natural stone, porcelain tile that mimics stone is an excellent second choice. Don’t forget to add radiant heat under the tile to keep your feet toasty on winter mornings.

Walls

You have two options when it comes to your bathroom walls: you can paint the walls white and add a pop of color with colorful towels, or you can put color on your bathroom walls and put crisp, white towels on the towel racks. Wrap classic white subway tile around a tub surround or backsplash, but make it modern by using white glass tiles instead of ceramic or by incorporating a glass tile accent strip into the design. Wallpaper is impractical for a bathroom, but you can add interest to plain walls with removable graphic vinyl decals.

Accessories

Bathroom accessories give you a chance to add softness and comfort to an otherwise hard-surfaced room and to appeal to the senses of sight, touch and smell. Luxurious towels are only the beginning. Add functional scented accessories such as soaps, lotions and candles and textured exfoliating mitts. Hang an ornate lacquered mirror over the sink, and tuck a small potted fern or vase of cut flowers into a corner of the vanity. Nothing stresses you out more then worrying about being late for work, so be sure to hang a stylish clock on the wall so you’ll always know what time it is.

Integrating Adjacent Rooms

No matter how peaceful your urban oasis bathroom is, it will seem out of place if it doesn’t share design elements with other rooms in your home. For example, if you have hardwood flooring in your master bedroom, choose a master bathroom flooring material that looks good with hardwood. Similarly, if your home is decorated in a Tuscan theme, bring a color from that theme or a piece of Tuscan art into the bathroom.

It’s so easy to transform a dingy bathroom into an urban oasis, there’s no excuse not to try these tips today. If you’re in search for national or local flooring experts, check out a reputable retailer and installer such as Floor Coverings International.

Luxury Style Trends For Your Bathroom In 2013

by Trish

All bathroom trends seem to point to one thing, a more natural and simple useable bathroom. Fashion designers are constantly coming up with new ways for you to make the most out of your bathroom space. Designers in 2013 have decided to go back a little in time and choose to make the most out of using materials like natural wood, and use bright natural colours such as creams, browns and whites to emphasise natural light in the bathroom.

Eco-Friendly Designs

2013 is going to be the year that home owners embrace eco-friendly designs within the home. If you are considering totally remodelling your bathroom, then it is worth taking a look at your current plumbing system. The government are encouraging homeowners to switch their plumbing system to a more eco-friendly system, known as a low-flow flush toilet.  These environmentally friendly toilets have been designed to fit in with the modern sleek designs of bathrooms, and are known for being extremely cost effective, reducing the amount of water used per flush. Not only will you be making a huge difference to the environment, but you will also save yourself a fortune.

An additional design feature of the bathroom that is going to be a hit in 2013 is the tankless water heaters. These heaters will provide hot warm on demand all around your home; you will find that these heaters will significantly reduce the cost of your home heating bill.

Natural, Sleek Design

Everyone knows that the bathroom should be the room that is a place of relaxation and meditation; this is the place that you should retreat to after a hard long day at work. Designers have been working hard to come up with features that can represent the outdoors, indoors. To keep up with latest fashion trends in the bathroom, you should only use natural materials such as wood, stone, granite or even a textured tile that represents one of these materials.

You should try and attempt to create a minimalistic look in your bathroom, to achieve this look you should fit a variety of different cabinets and cupboard in the bathroom where you can keep all your private belongings. A great cabinet idea for bathrooms in 2013 is a gorgeous mirrored cabinet, not only will it hide all your belongings, but it will also add to the natural look within your home, reflecting natural light all around the bathroom.

Some designers have suggested that you should remove old bath tubs from the bathroom and instead install a gorgeous sleek, walk in shower. Most people have a bath tub, which takes up half the bathroom and you will probably only use it around once a year.

My neighbors have to be the slowest at renovating their home

by The Shopping Maniac

Our next door neighbors are remodeling their home. The only problem is that they’re doing the work themselves and they only come by once a week or even only once every two weeks to work on the house. At this rate their house will be done in about two years!

Surprisingly at least one of the neighbors was next door working on the house all day today, from early morning until about 9 pm in the evening. They hadn’t come by since last week and they rarely come by during the week – especially not during the day during the week so it was surprising to hear them working on the house today.

It was so cold today too. Whatever they’re doing inside the house must be toxic because they keep opening the windows – all of them! With it being so cold and the windows being open I can only imagine how big their gas bill is going to be!

They must be redoing the bathroom. I was talking to them about their plans and they told me about how they’re going to put in a really nice shower and new cabinets and maybe even a Robern Medicine cabinet. It sounds like it will be nice when it’s done.

Have you ever had neighbors that slowly renovated next door to you?

Decorative Theme Ideas for Your Bathroom

by The Shopping Maniac

If you feel the same as countless other people who consider their bathroom as nothing more than a dazzling glare of fixtures and fittings together with tile, try rethinking how your bathroom could be. It is not that difficult, since all you want is your imagination to work out exactly the look and feel that you would prefer. Here are several design tips on small bathroom accessories that will give your bathroom that all important warm feeling in no time at all.

Bathrooms, similar to every other room in a house, should be themed since it gives the space a mood and brings your personality to your little corner of the world. It is where you can say, by choice, what is most important to you. There are hundreds of design ideas to choose from, including country, dolls, ocean life or even villas on the Mediterranean. The choice is yours, so choose the theme that you want. It is a good idea to pick a theme that matches, or at least correlates with other design styles in your house. By doing so, it will not be overly fussy, or out of tune with other areas of the house.

If your bathroom is a little on the small side, you are not out of line with a lot of other homeowners because bathrooms in older houses were quite literally carved out of small unused closets. Even if you are one of the many unfortunate folks that have inherited a smallish bathroom, you can nevertheless decorate for color. Bear in mind though, that with smaller bathrooms, less is often better. Your color scheme can be paint or wallpaper, but if the space is small, a neutral paint or wallpaper color can be used on either one wall, or as an accent on a chair rail. You can opt to paint a conventional white, and accentuate with color utilizing different decorating accessories like framed prints, shells, baskets, rug throws, and window treatments to name but a few.

Warm rusty tone of paint or wallpaper work very well with plants in the bathroom. But, select plants that like steamy warm conditions, and that can endure the different chemical substances. Some plants simply cannot take the mousse, hairspray, and perfumes that are used regularly in a bathroom. It will gum up the plants leaves and they will end up in your compost bin. If your bathroom is big enough, you can hang up plants from the ceiling, or position them on the back of the lavatory. Large garden style tubs have enough space on the rim of the tub to place small plants, and together with bath soaps and baskets, they look beautiful.

Rugs and towels play an important part when accessorizing your freshly decorated bathroom. For a feeling of sheer elegance, you will not go far wrong with hand woven or deep sumptuous throw rugs. Nevertheless, when buying the rugs, take into account the type of floor covering you are laying them on since they can present a slipping danger when placed on bathroom vinyl flooring. To prevent this, look for rugs that have either a non slip or rubber backing. Try coordinating your new rugs and toilet mat in either matching or alternate colors. When blended with a neutral backdrop, assorted textures work well to make an inviting, homey warm feeling to your bathroom.

Towel racks are another way to apply a little zing to your bathroom. Ornamental racks with colorful towels make a bathroom stand out. You can find towel racks in different tones of wood, bronze, silver or gold. Some folks paint their own wooden racks, and match their baskets and picture frames with them.

Contemporary bathroom lighting is just as important as the decoration and accessories. As a matter of fact, lighting can make or break the mood of any room. Because water and electricity do not mix very well, your initial consideration must be safety. If you have youngsters in the home, I would suggest that all lighting should be fixed and unreachable to little wet hands. That aside however, you can leave night lights on when the bathroom is not being used and if counter top space allows, a small lamp. You can then fit lamp shades that match your general theme.

Finally, take time and read a few decorating books on bathrooms. Look at their designs and see the numerous unusual ways to theme your bathroom. Use their designs for inspiration so your own creative juices will get flowing. It is okay to be uniquely you when decorating your bathroom, so go for it! You will never know what other themes take your fancy until you check them out when attempting to decorate your bathroom at home.
