Organize Your Closets To Create More Space

by The Shopping Maniac

It seems like it would be fairly easy to organize the closets but as it turns out it can actually be rather difficult if you have a lot of items or clutter to organize. Have you looked at your closets lately or do you just throw your stuff in there and try to ignore the mess that it’s become?

If your closets are taking on a life of their own there are professional closet organizers that you can consult. They will come in and help you organize your closet and you’ll end up with a neat and tidy closet. You’ll somehow end up with more storage space. Probably because some items have been thrown out, but also because the professional has come up with some nifty shelving or storage ideas.

You don’t necessarily need a professional to help you out. You can get some fantastic ideas online. You’ll find all kinds of ideas as to how to organize your closets and drawers. I especially like the idea of using drawer dividers to separate things like undergarments, and socks that are usually kept in the same drawer. It would just make it all the more neat and organized.

My closets and drawers aren’t the tidiest but one thing that I do that helps is that I have hideaway storage boxes on rollers that I store under the bed. Each spring and fall I go through my closets and drawers and change out my winter and summer wardrobe placing items that had been in the hideaway boxes for winter into the drawers and closets once cooler weather starts to set in, and then once warm weather returns I take the cold weather clothes out of the closets and replace them with shorts and cotton blouses and lighter clothing.

I also use hooks in my closets to hang robes and organize my closet. It really helps and it uses up that tiny bit of extra space. I even have a couple of hooks on the outside of my closet door too.

There are stores dedicated to storage space and making life easier for those who are finally getting various rooms or parts of their homes organized. You’ll find customizable closet organizing systems in these kinds of stores. They’ll certainly get you off to a good start if you have a standard sized closet. I have a very old house with very few closets and the one in my main bedroom is tiny tiny tiny … so I’m on my own as far as organizers go.

Have you organized your closets? Was it a lot of work? Was it worth it?

I think I need new windows

by The Shopping Maniac

I think I need to have new windows installed in my home. When I first bought my house 11 years ago we were told that the previous owners had had new windows installed about two or three years previously, but if they were new they weren’t installed all that well.

I’ve always noticed a little bit of moisture or humidity between the panes in the summer time and I knew that wasn’t supposed to happen if the windows had been installed properly. In the last few years the moisture between the panes has been getting worse in a few of the windows. It doesn’t happen in all the windows in my house, mainly in the upstairs windows – but either way, I don’t like it. You’re supposed to be able to see out of your windows all year long aren’t you? I can’t fully see out of my windows in the the fall, winter and spring. That’s not right!

So I’ve been starting to look at some companies that I can get to come and replace my windows. It would probably be cheaper for me if I could do it right now, but I think I’ll have to wait until spring. One company that I’m looking at is richmond windows as they have Pella windows. I’ll have to compare their prices though as I want the best price.

I wonder if I could just have my current windows re installed – properly? I mean, there’s nothing wrong with my windows, it’s the installation that has a problem. I should ask about that when I’m calling around. Yes – I could save a ton of money if I could just get the installation fixed. Maybe … Have any of you tried that? Have you had moisture between the panes problems with your windows too?

Tips for Buying Carpets

by The Shopping Maniac

They’re soft and they instantly transform any space into something luxurious and elegant. It’s no wonder why carpets have become very popular among homeowners who are thinking of decorating their new house or reinventing their not-so-new space. But before you head out to any of the shops selling carpet New Zealand has to offer, here are some things that you ought to know:

1. Buy from a reputable source.

These days, you can buy carpets from just about any home improvement or hardware store. You can even find carpets being sold at department stores and even online. But before you start shopping your best bet is always to buy from a known carpet store. Not only will they carry a wide assortment of carpet styles in their inventory but their staffers are also more likely to be able to answer your carpet-related questions efficiently. And especially when you’re decorating without the aid of an interior designer, you need all the carpet-related expertise that you can get.

2. Think about the maintenance requirements before buying.

Since you’ll be stuck with the carpet you buy for a very long time and changing carpets every year won’t be such a practical solution, you need to know before buying a carpet its maintenance requirements. If you’re a busy person, then you ought to look for a carpet which requires minimal cleaning. You should also look for stain-resistant carpets if you have little kids or pets around the house. Also go for dirt-resistant carpets for high-traffic areas.

3. Find out about the warranties.

Every shop will have their definition of what a warranty is and what it covers. “Wear” is one of the terms which you will doubtless encounter but while you may relate this term as to when your carpet loses its original and “new” appearance, your seller may only think that your carpet is worn out once it exhibits bald spots. The crushing warranty also specifies that there is no problem with your carpet for as long as its pile can still be restored to its original fashion. And since hot water extractions and pile raking can always restore almost every carpet’s pile into its original state then your seller may yet again be able to dodge having to honor the warranty.

4. Choose special carpeting for your stairs.

Because your stairs is a high-traffic area, you need to find a carpet which can resist all that foot traffic. Woven wool carpets are suitable for stairs because not only are they thick but they are also very durable. Thick carpets are crucial for stairs because the backing becomes very visible at the curved regions of the stairs if the carpet is too thin. Unfortunately, you’ll have to shell out a considerable amount of money for woven wool carpets.

Time for a new bed?

by The Shopping Maniac

I think it’s time to get a new mattress. Don’t they say that you should replace your mattress every 10 or 15 years or so depending upon what kind you purchased? If that’s true mine is due for a change very soon. The bed in our bedroom as well as the mattress was purchased when we moved into our house in 2001 so that means that it’s 11 years old.

I haven’t been sleeping as well lately and my back has been hurting a little bit on and off and I’ve been starting to wonder if it’s because of my bed. The mattress still seems like it’s in good shape but I suppose it’s quite possible that it’s starting to wear out.

I think in a few months when I’m back working at the hospital I might go looking for a new bed set. Especially if I’m still having some trouble sleeping and my back has continued to bother me. I’m actually taking a trip in a couple of months to LA … maybe while I’m there I’ll do some shopping and check out mattress stores los angeles while I’m there. Of course I think I’ll probably be pretty busy and if I go shopping it will be clothes shopping rather than for something I can’t bring on a plane … but there’s nothing wrong with a little window shopping no matter where you are, right?

Any suggestions from anyone on the best brands to buy? I can’t afford to spend thousands on a bed set but I know the higher the quality the longer they last.

How to Redecorate Your Master Bedroom on a Budget

by Trish

Are you desiring a new look for your master bedroom, but not the expense that may come with it? If so, then you will be pleased to know that there are many things you can do to restyle your room without forking out a lot of cash. Here are some great tips for how to redecorate your master bedroom on a budget:

Change your bedding. Your bed is the focal point of your room, and what you dress it with can set the entire tone of the room, as well as guide you on how to decorate the rest of your room. Fortunately, there are literally thousands of bedding styles to choose from – in an array of colors, fabric textures, and patterns – and it’s possible to find complete bedding sets that include sheets, a comforter, a bed skirt, pillow covers, accent pillows, and more for a relatively low cost, especially if you are willing to shop around. Check out bedding stores, as well as Internet sites, closeout stores, and retail department stores to explore your options and find great deals.

Rearrange your furniture. Creating a new layout with your existing furniture can completely change the look and feel of your bedroom. Roll up your sleeves and recruit some strong arms and try a number of different arrangements to find one that works for you.

Treat your walls. When it comes to giving your walls a new look, you are really only limited by your imagination, and one of the best things about treating your walls is that you can get a lot of effect for a very little amount of money. Of course, the simplest and cheapest thing you can do is to give your walls a fresh coat of paint in a new color. However, if you are creative (and a little artsy-crafty), you can apply a wall texture, create a faux finish, or even paint a wall mural. Additionally, consider options like wallpaper, fabric, and decals.
Refinish your furniture. Give tired, old furniture a new look by refinishing it. You have a lot of options here, some more labor intensive than others, but the hard work will be well worth the dramatic results you can get from a refinishing job. Consider re-staining wooden furniture to give it a new tone (or even just to make it look like new again), or choosing a solid paint in either neutrals or a bold statement color.

As you can see, it is possible for you to create an entirely new master bedroom environment without spending a lot of money as long as you are willing to invest some resourcefulness, creativity, and legwork. Draw from these ideas for inspiration, and happy decorating!
