I love my neighborhood

by The Shopping Maniac

Last weekend when my husband and I were working outside at the front of our house one of our neighbors came by and started talking with my husband.

The neighbor works for our cities bus company and he happened to mention that they were going to be hiring soon in a particular division and since it has to do with health care (this part of the bus division transports the handicapped) he thought my husband might be interested in the job.

It would certainly pay more than what my husband it making now .. oh and there would be great health and pension benefits too.

So my husband has been working on his resume and then going and talking with our neighbor .. polishing up the keywords that they think the bus company will be looking for etc.

Earlier tonight the neighbor came by to offer a few suggestions and he gave my husband a present – a box of cohiba cigars. Now my husband doesn’t really smoke cigars … but his brother does on occasion so I guess we can save them and then they can have a smoke together next time his brother comes down. Maybe they can celebrate my husbands new job together? Now that would be nice.

I love our neighborhood. The people are so nice. We all do favors for each other, give little gifts on special occasions or at Christmas etc. It’s a nice place to live. Now this neighborhood might actually help my husband get a better job. I love it.

Those darn red lily beetles!

by The Shopping Maniac

We have a pest problem in our garden.

Most of our plants are extremely healthy, but last year we noticed these red beetle like bugs on our various lily plants. It wasn’t long before we notice most of the leaves had holes in them and the plants were starting to look raggy.

Last year I looked up our new pest and discovered that they were called “Lily beetles”. I also found out that they’re pretty hard to get rid of.

It seems that the best method of getting rid of them is to hand pick the beetles off the plants and squish them dead. You also need to look at the underside of the leaves for a mass that looks quite a bit like dark bird poop. that’s the larvae – the part of the cycle that does the most damage – the larvae cover themselves in poop in order to hid or to be more repellent to bugs that might eat them. I guess it’s a protective coating in more ways than one.

So last year that’s what we did, we’d pick off all the beetles and poopy larvae that we could find and try to kill the pests. Our lilies started looking better but very few of them bloomed.

The same thing happened this year, but we were more on top of the problem than last year. We actually had more lily blooms this year and some of our plants look fairly healthy thanks to diligent beetle and larvae picking.

I did find out that there is another way to get rid of this dreadful pest. Neem Oil. It’s an organic pesticide. Great for us since our garden is 100% organic.

The only problem is that it’s very hard to find pure Neem oil here in Canada. Oh sure there are lots of “leaf shine’ products that contain Neem oil and I’m sure they’d work if we’d try them. Trouble is we’d go through a lot of bottles before we got rid of our lily beetle infestation!

So last week I went looking for a place that sold pure Neem oil. I found one place … I think it’s more of a hydroponic systems store, that sold pure Neem oil in 1 Litre bottles.

The store isn’t too far from us – it’s on Eastern Avenue here in Toronto. So on Saturday we took a ride over to the store and I got my Neem oil. I’m treating it like gold. I know it’s going to help us get rid of those darn lily beetle pests once and for all.

If you want to know how to use Neem oil to get rid of pests I’ll tell you. Just mix about a teaspoon of neem oil (warm it up first so it will run better) to a litre bottle of warm water. Add a squirt of dish detergent as well (the soap helps make it stick to the plants leaves).

Mix and then go out and spray it on your Lily plants or any other plants that are being invaded by pests. In the case of lily beetle infestations make sure you spray the underside of the leaves and if you have extra liquid dump it on the ground around the affected plant. Lily beetles mate and lay eggs in the soil around their feeder plants so watering the plant with a Neem oil mix might help kill off some of the eggs or baby larvae.

As I said our garden is organic and we like to have some good bugs around to help control the pests. So we won’t be spraying all of our plants with this mix as it can harm Lady Bugs and Bees. We’ll spray in the early morning when it’s cool or in the early evening when the good bugs like bees won’t be hovering around the plants.

I hope this helps if you have Lily Beetles eating all of your Lily plants.

BTW while I was doing some research on neem oil I found out that some people use it for skin care. I also read that it’s supposed to help cure psoriasis. I have a patch of psoriasis on my wrist that just won’t go away so I might rub some neem oil on the spot and see if it helps.

Perfect day for a barbecue

by The Shopping Maniac

Oh man, it’s just lovely outside today. It’s hot (just under 80 F right now) and sunny and all I want to do it get outside and enjoy what’s left of the day.

We’re going to have a barbecue tonight. I marinated some steaks this afternoon and prepared some vegetables for the grill. All I need to do it make a salad to go with dinner and then get my husband to heat up the barbecue.

I think we might even eat outside tonight. We haven’t set up the patio table and chairs yet so I guess I’ll try to find our outdoor cushions and we can just have a little picnic on the patio.

The next few days are supposed to be nice so I have a feeling we’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors. Hmmm Maybe we’ll even take the dog to the beach this weekend. She’s a Labrador Retriever and she loves nothing more than a good swim in the lake (and cookies) and we love nothing more than a tired dog. LOL

What are your plans for this weekend? Are you barbecuing and spending time enjoying the nice weather like us?

New Neighbors soon! The house next door is SOLD

by The Shopping Maniac

It looks like we’ll have new neighbors soon. Much sooner than I thought we would.

The house next door … you know, the one that the home owners son has been renting out for the last year to a series of awful people? Yeah, that one … they put it up for sale about a three weeks ago and amazingly it’s been sold.

I personally thought the price they were asking was too high for the house. It was low for my area … about a hundred thousand dollars lower than what most houses in my area are selling for … but since the house hasn’t ever had any renovations done on it and I think it needs a new furnace, air conditioner and generally a lot of work the price, to me at least, was about 50,000 higher than I thought it should have been.

Of course I have no idea how much it actually sold for. Perhaps they accepted a bid that was a lot lower than the asking price.

I also don’t know who bought the house or when they’ll be moving in. There was a man at the house on Thursday that must have had serious interest in it as I believe he had an inspection done. They were at the house for about three hours … but when the house didn’t have a sold sign up by that evening or even the next day I thought that if he made a bid at all it wasn’t accepted. Who knows … maybe they went back and forth with bids all weekend until they finally came to a deal on Monday (when the sold sign went up).

I’m just hoping that whoever moves in 1. doesn’t turn around and rent the house out to bad people again and 2. turns out to be a decent neighbor. My definition of a decent neighbor is someone who will say hi or at least be polite when you see them outside their house (especially important since we’ll have to take turns using our shared tiny one car driveway) and who is fairly quite (since our houses are so very close together). I don’t think that’s too much to ask.

Ok, gotta go and find something to eat that won’t bother my stomach. Geez it’s like I took a handful of the best diet pills on the market! I’m starving yet don’t really feel like eating as I know I’ll be in pain after I eat – thanks to my Crohn’s disease that’s activated again. See the post below for more on that if you’re interested.

Our neighbors home is up for sale – no more renters

by The Shopping Maniac

Yeah! Our neighbors house is up for sale! I’m so happy!

The “for sale” sign went up on their lawn yesterday! Hopefully, if they manage to sell the house we won’t have to put up with any more awful renters!

So happy! LOL

I’m still shaking my head over how the last renters apparently stole the living room and dining room chandeliers from the house! Can you believe the nerve of those people?

I have a feeling that the house next door might take a little while to sell. I know it needs a new furnace and the air conditioning doesn’t work at all … plus there’s been absolutely no renovations to the house, ever. Oh and the owners son took out the washing machine and didn’t put a new one in before putting the house up for sale … so I’m sure all of those things will bring the price down.

The news tonight said the the average price of a home in Toronto in March was something like $435,000 but they’re asking $375,000 for it and considering that it needs work I don’t think they’ll get much more than three hundred for it. So it will be a few weeks or maybe even months before we find out who our new neighbors might be …

I’m just going to keep my fingers crossed that the home owners family doesn’t get discouraged and take the house off the market again like they did a year and a half ago when they tried to sell it for a too high price.
