How to Make Sure You Can Get Work Done on Your Business Trip

by Trish

If you are going on a business trip then this may mean a free holiday for you where you will get put up in a nice hotel while having the benefit of somewhere to explore in your free time. Ultimately though you will still be on company time for much of it, and that means that when you’re not doing whatever it is that you were sent to do, you should still be finding ways to be productive and do some kind of work.

So the question is, how do you make sure that your hotel will facilitate this work, and how do you make yourself able to work when it doesn’t?

Equipment

First of all you should make sure that you are bringing the right equipment with you, and specifically this should of course mean a small laptop or netbook you can work on, and anything ese you might need to do your job.

Something that can make a big difference here is to bring with you either a dongle, or a smartphone that provides internet tethering. While most hotels these days will offer you WiFi, carrying these things with you will ensure that you can access the internet even where they don’t and this will allow you to do research and answer e-mails on the train/plane as well. Bringing a spare battery can also help as this way you can keep working even when you can’t find a place to recharge.

Hotel

When you choose your hotel it makes sense to try and find somewhere that will offer WiFi, but also a good desk to work on and of course coffee making facilities in the room to keep your mind sharp. If you can get a room that’s away from any noise, and that has a good view, then this will be even better.

Meanwhile you should also try and limit the time you will waste doing other things. Look for a B&B that offers you breakfast for instance and this is time saved when you would otherwise be looking around for a place to eat. Likewise if you can find a hotel that provides good transport links then you can spend less time walking and more time working.

Another aspect to consider is how comfortable the place you’re staying is. Choosing somewhere nice isn’t just an indulgent way to waste money – if you sleep better then you’ll find you are more likely to wake up feeling recharged and able to work the next day.

Nearby Amenities

It’s also worth looking into the nearby amenities that are on offer where you’re staying. If you can find a good coffee shop to work in then this will provide you with somewhere you can operate that will be likely to have power sockets, free internet and a fairly quiet atmosphere. Other great places to work while you’re travelling include libraries, gyms and university campuses so look for these in the area when you’ve had to sign out of your hotel.

Frugal Family Fun: How to Save Big on Hotels

by Trish

Traveling with a family can be costly, but it doesn’t have to be with some careful planning and by using the following resources that may help defray expense.  Families don’t have to sacrifice staying at the most family-friendly hotels to enjoy these savings either.  Simply by cutting a few corners and adjusting their trip a bit, they can save a considerable amount of money while still vacationing in style.

Hotel Memberships

Since most hotels offer memberships for travelers who frequent a chain often, a membership can be a great asset when procuring a good deal for a family hotel stay.  Often, memberships allow guests to rack up rewards points; some of these rewards points are based simply on referring other customers to the hotel or hotel chain.  Many families choose to cash in their rewards points for great deals or use their membership benefits to enhance their vacation stay.  If one or both spouses travel, be sure to sign up for these loyalty programs so you can earn free stays for your family vacation.

All Inclusive Package Deals

Hotels and resorts around the world offer package deals for vacationing families.  These deals can add up to super savings especially where meals are concerned.  Feeding a large family on the road can be a considerable expense, but many acclaimed and family oriented hotels know this and understand that a great package deal makes them competitive and likely to garner repeat visitors who refer their friends!  If you aren’t willing to sign on for a package deal, look for hotels or resorts where the kids always eat for free.  Also, be sure to find a hotel that offers free continental breakfasts—free breakfast for a week is a huge savings for any family.

Off Season / Mid-Week Reservations

Traveling to many locations during their peak season is the wrong time to expect big savings.  On the other hand, if you are willing to plan your stay during the off season or during the middle of the week, you are likely to save considerably on your hotel stay.  Hotels typically offer specials and beds and breakfasts and inns are generally negotiable—especially during the off season when their rooms might otherwise sit empty.  It’s possible to save as much as half the cost of a room during the middle of the week.  Many families enjoy their stay more when have to contend with fewer crowds vying for services.

Coupons & Discounts

Always visit hotel websites to check for coupons or coupon codes that allow travelers to save money when they book their stay.  Look for discounts as well or specials that may tickle your budget’s fancy.  If your coupon search doesn’t result in a discounted room or rooms, consider the hotel’s other amenities like restaurants; these venues usually offer specials for guests of the hotel.  If your hotel of choice is not publicizing any discounts or specials, don’t be afraid to ask for one; many hotels will happily accommodate you with some savings in order to procure your business—but you’ve got to ask!

Book in Advance & Be a Competitive Shopper

Planning ahead and booking in advance can often lead to a significant cost savings.  Spend plenty of time researching a variety of family-friendly hotels so you can get the best deal for the time you plan to travel.  Planning ahead also allows you to check other sites for discounts like the American Automobile Association or one of the popular travel websites like Expedia or Orbitz.  Sometimes booking your flight at the same time as your hotel can lead to big savings for families, too.

Burnt out – I need a vacation!

by The Shopping Maniac

All I’ve been doing since the beginning of September is studying studying studying. Well that and renovating my house and keeping up with all my websites etc .. I basically don’t sleep. Really – I think I get about 5 hours a night and that’s it. It’s not enough.

Anyway, once I’m done with my two college courses in December and well I suppose maybe I’ll wait until after Christmas is over .. I think I might treat myself to a vacation. It will be well deserved. I’ve been working very hard these last few months and by the time I’m done my courses and hopefully about to start my job again I’ll need a holiday. Of course if I’m about to go back to work I probably won’t be able to go, but maybe since I’ll be working shift work with up to five days off at a time I might be able to take a winter vacation. Perhaps one of those south padre island beach house rentals. I could do something like that as a five day vacation and be back to work all relaxed … yeah … that sounds good doesn’t it?

Do you ever feel like you just need to get away for a vacation? Even a short one, a weekend a long weekend?

5 Great Tour Groups for Cyclists Visiting Africa

by Trish

If you are a cyclist, then you are probably always looking for new environments in which to travel by wheel. You may not be aware that Africa is full of cyclist-friendly adventures, any of which would make a vacation to remember for a lifetime. Are you interested in learning about what Africa has to offer? Here are five great tour groups for cyclists visiting Africa:

Wildcat Biking Tours. Bring your mountain bike to Morocco for the Tuareg Trail tour through the Anti Atlas mountains. This tour group offers two tours in Morocco and also two tours in Tunisia, and is great for moderate to experienced bikers, as the guides modify the tour according to the experience level of the group.

Tour de Wilderness. If you are an avid mountain biker, then this unforgettable journey may be the perfect fit for you. Travel down to South Africa for the Tour de Wilderness, arguably South Africa’s most popular mountain biking tour offering. The Tour de Wilderness takes place every year, over a period of five days (so you may need to train for this one!), and it is also a charity tour. Not sure five straight days of biking through the mountains is for you? Then you can choose between the original (challenging) route or the explorer route.

Escape Adventures. This is a sixteen day adventure biking through the Eastern Africa region from Tanzania to Kenya. One thing that makes this cycling tour group so special is that they offer a family friendly expedition, so you can bring the little ones along.

Escape Cycle Tours. This tour group is unique in that it offers customized mountain bike tours, as well as road bike tours. Additionally, tours are hosted throughout the year, covering a broad range of Africa’s scenery, from Botswana to the many provinces of South Africa. Therefore, you are likely to find exactly what you are looking for out of an Escape Cycle Tour. Tour lengths range from four days to twelve, so you have the ability to choose a tour perfect for the experience level of your group.

Rwanda Adventures. Rwanda is known throughout the cycling community as one of the all around best places to cycle in Africa. As the name suggests, the Rwanda Adventures tour group specializes in tours through the terrain of Rwanda.

In addition to being an eco-friendly way of travelling, cycling is also a great way to see the beautiful continent of Africa up close and personal. There are many different tours to choose from, so check out all of these great options before you decide which is right for you.
